Iggy Pop Named Record Store Day Ambassador 2012

Iggy Pop has been named ambassador for Record Store Day 2012.  The annual event is used to publicize and drive business to independent record stores.  This years Record Store Day takes place on April 21st.  It is marked with special shows and one day sales events.

Iggy Pops statement on his new position on the Record Store Day website:

"A person should have a personality.   You won't get one dicking around on the computer.  It helps to go somewhere where there are other persons.  Persons who are interested in something you are.  That's how a record store or any shop that's got some life to it should work.  It's not about selling shit."

I got my name, my musical education and my personality all from working at a record store during the tender years.  In the 50's and 60's the teen kids used to gather after school at these places to listen free to the latest singles and see if they liked the beat.  You could buy the disc you liked for 79 cents and if you were lucky meet a chick.  Clerks in these places became managers, (like Brian Epstein), label heads (Jack Holzman) and faces on album covers (like me).

Personally I feel best in a store that, while staying small and socially relaxed, still keeps a complete variety of music types and non musical recordings on offer.  All of this is cool and has a much bigger future than most people realize today.

As Record Store Day Ambassador for 2012 I feel like a representative from some exotic jungle full of life and death and sex and anger, called upon to wear a leopard skin and translate joy to the world of the dead."

So on April 21st. make sure you go to your favorite record store and pick something up, browse around, talk to the guy behind the counter, because he is a hell of a lot more interesting than clicking that button on your itunes account.  Hopefully you enjoy it and go back, because there aren't a lot of them around anymore, and we sure the fuck will miss them when it's too late.

AC/DC Puts New Album On Hold Due To Illness In The Band

AC/DC
The new AC/DC album has been put on hold due to a serious illness in the band.  "One of the boys is a little sick and I can't say anything, but he's getting better." Explained frontman Brian Johnson to The Cowhead Show. "He's doing wonderful.  Full recovery fully expected.

The band is expected to continue recording their follow up to 'Black Ice' after the unknown band member has recovered.  "It's a wonderful thing when we get in a room," says Brian.  "Whenever the boys get back together, I get all excited.  The boys, after a while, pick the guitars up, Phil [Rudd] will make his way to the drums, Cliff [Williams] will pull his bass out and then all of a sudden this noise comes out and I sit there with just this big old grin on my face.  It's pretty cool."

Listen to the full interview with Brian Johnson here:

Hulk Hogan Was Almost in Metallica

Hulk Hogan

Hogan said in a recent interview with Sun "I used to be a session musician before I was a wrestler. I played bass guitar. I was big pals with Lars Ulrich and he asked me if I wanted to play bass with Metallica in their early days but it didn't work out.

So just think, we almost had a alternative universe of Metallica with a lot of neon colors and ripped shirts. Just Imagine what the Metallica logo could have looked like.

Cypress Hill Go Dubstep on New EP

Cypress Hill
First Korn, now...  Cypress Hill?  That's right, the hip-hoppers are set to release a five song EP in April titled 'Cypress X Rusko.  Cypress Hill have teamed up with dubstep DJ Rusko for the EP.  B-Real said about the EP "This is one of those styles that we felt doing with Rusko would be a great match.  We've always been the type of group to take chances on doing something radically different than what people expect from us."  He explained "This carries with the tradition of us going out of the box.  If it's not something that we embrace then we don't dare mess with it and this is something we fell right into the pocket of."

Love it or hate it,  it seems dubstep is here to stay for awhile.  At least until bands and media drill it into the ground and nobody wants to have anything to do with it anymore.  What's next Metallica and Shrillex teaming up together?

How do you feel about dubstep bleeding into other genres?  Let us know below.

Velvet Revolver Not Likely to Reunite with Scott Weiland

Velvet Revolver
Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum has dismissed any rumors that the band will reunite with frontman Scott Weiland.  The band performed a one off charity gig earlier this month, spreading rumors that the band was going to reunite for a new album and tour.  Sorum commented during a fan Q & A on Musinq.net about the reunion, and the possibility of another singer fronting the band.  "Yes, we are trying out a guy from England now." When asked about making another album with Weiland "You never know.  Scott is a great frontman.  It's just hard to be on the road sometimes when things don't flow."

Below is video of the band performing at the House of Blues in Hollywood for the benefit concert.

If Velvet Revolver doesn't reunite with Scott Weiland, who do you think would make a good frontman for the band?  Let us know in the comments section below.

"I struggled with this album title for a long time... I had been recording this album in between tours and booking tours, studio sessions, and trying to live somewhat of a normal life.  Life go in the way of that Plans Within Plans was the only way I could describe all the mayhem that was going on behind the scenes of putting this collection of brand new songs together."

Black Sabbath Was Originally Confirmed To Play Coachella

Black Sabbath
Coachella this year was suppose to look a little different.  Black Sabbath was originally confirmed to headline the yearly festival, but had to pull out just days before the official lineup due to the news of Toni Iommi's lymphoma diagnosis.

The Festival has not revealed what band was added at the last minute.  The official headline lineup is Radiohead, the Black Keys and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.  The full three day lineup can be found here. This year will be the first time for the festival to be held over two weekends (April 13-15, April 20-22).

Still without the reunion of Black Sabbath there are still some great reunions in the desert, Refused, At The Drive-In, and Mazzy Star.

Dave Grohl On Why Rock Isn't Dead, and Why The Foo Fighters Think They Suck.

Foo Fighters
When Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters was asked how his year was, his answer:"I honestly think 2011 was the best year of my entire life." And why not, he's fronts probably the biggest band on the planet.  2011 brought the Foo Fighters a very successful seventh studio album 'Wasting Light', with a huge global tour and six Grammy nominations.

But when asked by Billboard about his band, he had another thought "You have to understand, we're a really simple band. We think we suck and we try really hard to make good records and we practice.  We don't feel like the biggest, best band in the world.  We just feel like the same five dorks that were touring in a van 17 years ago, that hasn't changed."

Like every year there is always the question, Is Rock dead?  "I don't think there's anything wrong with rock at all. It's overlooked. And right now, the current musical climate is not unlike it was back in 1991, right before Nirvana got popular.  The late '80s was full of over-produced pop that kids had nothing to grab hold of."  Said Grohl.

The Foo Fighters are performing, and are nominated for 6 Grammys, including album of the year.  Their album 'Wasting Light' sold 235,000 copies its first week, becoming the band's first number one album in the United States.

Skiba said of the project "Creating a record on my own and deciding who plays and how the songs were structured, it was fun to do.   I love working with my band-mates in Alk3 but to make a rock record that was just mine was something that I wanted to do."  He explains the project as sounding "dancy, catchy rock in an Alkaline Trio vein, with an '80's punk vibe."

The debut album 'Babylon', will be released later this year on Superball Music.

Now Is Your Chance To Be The New Killswitch Engage Frontman

Last week Killwitch Engage split with longtime frontman Howard Jones.  This news lead many fans to wonder who would be the new vocalist for the band.  Many speculated that the original KsE frontman Jesse Leach would return to the band.  Yesterday Leach gave fans a "no comment" on his facebook page.

Coachella 2012 Lineup Is Here

The Coachella  released their official 2012 lineup on twitter earlier today.  Headlining this year are, The Black Keys, Radiohead, and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg as the finale.  This year the festival will be having the exact same lineup twice in a row over two weekends.  The dates for the show are April 13-15 and April 20-22.

The rumors are true for a Refused reunion at the festival.  Last month we reported that Refused was rumored to reunite at the festival after breaking up more than 10 years ago at the height of the bands success.

What band and day of the festival are you most looking forward to?

Black Sabbath Guitarits Tony Iommi Diagnosed With Lymphoma

Toni Iommi
Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with "early stages of lymphoma" according to the bands publicist. "Iommi is currently working with doctors to establish the best treatment plan. The 'Iron Man' of Rock and Roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery."

Black Sabbath's original lineup had announced that they were going to start recording their first album of new material in 30 years, with producer Rick Rubin.  The project has been moved from Los Angeles to England for Iommi's treatment.

The band also had planned on beginning a tour May 18th in Moscow, but it's not clear if the news will change those dates.

Woman Blames Marilyn Manson and NIN For Burning House Down

Marilyn Manson
A woman who burned her parents house down says that the music of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails made her do it.  Christina Paz aged 29, was charged with arson for pouring superglue on the bed and lighting it and lighting curtains on fire in another room.

Paz grew up in the home, but broke in and stayed for a few days before burning it down.  She told investigators "she was angry at her mom and dad for trying to kill her on Christmas day, that they had planned to sodomzie her and chop her up with the help of a neighbor."

When she was asked how she knew her parents wanted to kill her, she said "through the music of Marilyn Manson and NIN."

Sound familiar?  In the 90's everyone blamed these guys and their music for all the shit they did.

Thom Yorke
Thom Yorke has released two new songs 'Twist' and 'Come Together' he recorded for a fashion show for clothing label Rag and Bone last year.   'Stuck Together' features Radiohead's Guitar/ keyboardist Jonny Greenwood.  If you're expecting Radiohead tracks don't bother.   They are "interesting" to say the least.  Definitely background for a fashion show that i'm sure he was paid very well to do. If you're a die hard Radiohead fan and cant pass up anything Yorke,  check them out and let us know what you think.

Howard Jones Explains Departure From Killswitch Engage

Howard Jones
A few days ago it was announced that lead singer Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage was leaving the band, with little explanation.  Today he released his reason for leaving on the Killswitch Engage website.

"Well, I guess I will shed a little light without going too deep.  As some of you may know, I've had a pretty interesting couple of years to say the least battling with some personal issues.  One of the low points being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes that went unchecked for years.

The rest of the band stuck with me through it, and to be honest they are the ones that kept me going.  The whole experience definitely put a scare in me.

Recently we've been in writing mode but somehow I couldn't get excited about the new album and all the touring that would go with it.  The guys saw it before I did.  In hindsight I now realize that my heart wasn't in it.

I have had an amazing decade with KSE.  I love Justin, MikeD, Joel and Adam for hanging in there and standing by me no matter how bad it was.  I have so many good memories, and those are the ones that I will keep.

Will I be involved in music again? Sure, I have been in bands for a little over half my life, can't stop now. Until then, get the new KsE album, it's going to be good.  Thanks everyone for letting me try to entertain you, and I wish myself well in my endeavors.  Gone fishin' Howard"

Killswitch Engage are currently writing the new album, with plans to record in February or March.

Ok.. who do you think should replace Howard Jones in KSE?  Let us know in the comments.

Why Velvet Revolver Will Reunite For One Show

Velvet Revolver will reunite for one show only next Thursday at the L.A. House Of Blues despite not playing with Scott Weiland for more than four years.  Velvet Revolver guitarist Dave Kushner put the band back together for his best friend John O'Brien who was found in his Chicago hotel room last August.  The show will be a benefit for  O'Brien's wife and family.
Velvet Revolver

Kushner told Rolling Stone, he knew that bringing the band back together would be newsworthy and that was the plan.  "I'm doing it so that this sells out and that money can go to her, period."  The band is only scheduled to play the January 12th gig and Kushner says they are taking a cautious approach at playing any other shows.  "We haven't played together in four years, and so we're really just like, 'Let's see how this goes,"

Also appearing that night will be Maroon 5, Sheryl Crow, Tom Morello, and Fishbone.

RATT Recording New Track With Dave Grohl

Pearcy, Grohl, De Martini
Stephen Pearcy, vocalist for RATT tweeted a picture of him Dave Grohl,  and RATT guitarist Warren De Martini. "Warren and I are recording an original song (Grohl song idea open to RATT madness)," Pearcy Tweeted "Not for a RATT record. We'll let Dave tell you about it when he's ready"

   Well Dave. Explain this one.

                                                                           .

The Black Keys Blame the State of Rock on Nickelback. Update:

According to The Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney "Rock and roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world"  Carney commented "[Musicians] became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be shit- therefore you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world."
The Black Keys

"Rock and roll is the music I feel the most passionately about, and I don't like to see it fucking ruined and spoon fed down our throats in this watered- down, post-grunge crap, horrendous shit."

With people like Lady Gaga and Ke$ha threatening to make rock albums in 2012 and "save rock music", Skrillex teaming up with Korn for 'The Path of Totality', and Rap and Hip- Hop mostly dominating the charts over the last 10 years.  What will happen to rock music? Will it continue its current path or will rock again dominate the charts?  With what The Black Keys have been doing, Carney better be careful they could soon enough be lumped in with the biggest bands in the world.

UPDATE: Nickelback has responded on twitter. "thanks to the drummer in The Black Keys calling us the biggest band in the world in Rolling Stone. HEHE". Nickelback I guess chose to ignore the rest of what Carney was saying, that the band was "shit".

The Black Keys' seventh studio album El Camino is out now.

Rock music is definitely making a cultural shift,  but is it for the better?  Where will it go?  Let us know what you think.

Killswitch Engage Part Ways With Lead Singer

Killswitch Engage
Killswitch Engage just announced they will be parting ways with their lead singer Howard Jones. They band said in a official press release that Jones will be pursuing other interests outside the band.

The official statement on their Facebook page reads: "To our family, friends and fans: We have decided to continue on without Howard Jones as the singer of Killswitch Engage. We love Howard and are thankful for the nine years that we’ve had him in the band. Out of respect for everyone involved, we will not be discussing the specific reasons behind this decision. Howard is a part of our family and always will be, and we wish him well. He has left big shoes to fill, so we certainly have our work cut out for us to find the next singer of Killswitch, something we plan on making priority #1 going forward. Most importantly, thanks to all of you for all the support throughout the years and for sticking by us for all this time. We really do appreciate it and we very much look forward to having a new record for all of you in the not too distant future that we can all be proud of. Sincerely, Adam, Joel, Mike & Justin."

Do you think Killswitch will be able to continue their success without Jones?

Blink 182 aren't known for taking themselves seriously.  There videos are usually over the top and crazy like in the video for 'All the Small Things' where they make fun of the popular boy bands of the early 2000's.

In their new video for 'After Midnight' they take a darker turn.  Mark Hoppus told MTV News, "the video takes place in a psychiatric ward, and this guy and this girl escape from their rooms and have a night of romance and passion and fun and wild excistence..."   He also says the video didn't come to them right away.  "We went through probably 30 different treatments for this video, and a lot of them were great, and a lot  of them weren't so great but [director] Isaac Rentz's stuck out as a really cool idea." he says, "We wanted it to be something different than just a bunch of people having fun and having a party; we wanted it to be a little darker, a little more troubled, and Isaac's treatment did that."

'Neighborhoods' is Blink 182's sixth studio album, their first album of new material in eight years.

Les Claypool Talks About Primus 'Breakup'

Primus
Les Claypool hasn't really talked about why Primus took almost a 11 year hiatus between 1999's Antipop and 2011's Green Naugahyde.  Claypool did a recent interview with Spinner and explained that Primus broke up "for about three years, Then we came back and did the nostalgia thing, in '03, with a pretty big tour. And then in 2006 we did another round. But those tours, they were just- they were what they were."

"We're kind of  under the radar guys. We've got to go out and work. So for us to stop like we did - we weren't even talking. We definitely broke up. We broke up but we didn't want to tell everybody, so we said 'We'll, we're on hiatus.'"

Claypool explained about recording the new record at his home in Sonoma County "There were not necessarily surprises, but I was very insistent that everyone brought in material. Because, In the past with Primus, either I brought in material or it was stuff that we jammed on together in rehearsal or soundcheck or whatever."

Green Naugahyde is out now.  Primus begins their European tour in the Spring of 2012.

Fred Durst Promises New Limp Bizkit Album in 2012.. But Does Anyone Care?

2011 was a hell of a year for Limp Bizkit, and not really a good year.  They released there album 'Gold Cobra'  to mixed reviews, then got dropped from their label a few months later. They played some club dates and festivals, also canceling as many shows as they played.

Limp Bizkit
Fred Durst wants to change all the negativity in 2012.  He released a online message telling of his plans including working on a follow up to 2005's EP 'The Unquestionable Truth, Part 1'.  "LB is joining forces w the unexpected to bring you our best material yet in 2012." he stated.  "Gold Cobra was for the core and our farewell to the corrupt machine."  Referring to not having label constraints on the new album.

"We are grateful for every moment and bid the most sincere farewell to those we will now leave behind. LB will start releasing new material unethically and affectively as soon as the deals are signed and sealed in January as attorneys start their holiday vacations months before the holidays even begin. And btw, our video POOP will finally find its way in its entirety to your eyeballs soon enough."

We aren't sure if the original lineup of the band is going to return for the new project, but I'm looking forward to posting the video for 'POOP' when it comes out.. I think.

Let us know what you think. Should LB pack it in or keep making albums?
